Rental Categories

The table of rental categories above distinguishes between non-commercial and commercial uses of church space. For non-commercial use, if there is no charge for attending an event, there would be no rental charge for the space. (Note: all users pay custodial and security fees as specified above).  If there is a charge and some profit is to be donated to the church, then the lower fee structure can be allowed and a donation of profits to the church negotiated through the office of the Church Administrator. If there is a charge and no profit is given to Glebe St. James, then the higher rate would be charged. These rates would be the same for both parishioners and non-parishioners. For commercial uses such as a film or rehearsal for a theatre event, the higher rates apply.

Organizations invited by GSJ to use the facilities for events in harmony with GSJ ministry would be subject to one of the rates depending on whether they charge for the event and whether they donate a portion of their profits to the church.

Where organizations charge for an event and donate to the church, a donation of 50% of profits to the church is suggested. Since donations are supposed to be voluntary, the Church Administrator may recommend a percentage of profits to be donated. The percentage donated should be specified in the contract prior to the event.

Insurance Categories

Glebe St. James carries insurance through the General Insurance Plan for the United Church of Canada. This policy covers liability for the normal church events – weddings, funerals, services of worship, Arts Under One Roof and concerts and any other events that are part of our normal activities.

If others use our facilities, our insurance may cover liability if it is for a charitable purpose. We must check with our broker in these cases to be sure our insurance covers such events.

For all other events, the renter must provide us with a Certificate of Liability Insurance. Our broker, Scrivens, will sell such insurance for events at our church if the renter does not have such insurance. Alternatively, renters may acquire single-event (e.g., recital/concert) insurance through:    www.palcanada.com.  In particular, Palcanada offers single-event insurance tailored to the needs of performers.

If an incident occurs when the third party user of the church was not insured, GSJ liability insurance would cover the church, but our liability limit would be reduced by the amount of the award.  Our limit is $2 million annually.                                .
